I make no secret of the fact that I adore cats and I don’t care if anyone refers to me as a crazy cat lady either. I thought I’d put together a list of 10 reasons why cats are awesome because I don’t give my furry babies enough attention on my blog and I want to include them more. Having cats has saved me in many ways, they’re my kids and I wouldn’t change them for the world.
I’ve included a few photos of our cats in this post. The quality might not be as good as usual, because they were taken with my phone and not my DSLR camera. Hope you enjoy anyway!
10 Reasons Why Cats Are Awesome
1. They give you something to wake up for
We got our first cat when I was in a really dark patch of depression. I was struggling to get out of bed and function like a regular human.. when we got our male cat (who was a kitten at the time) he gave me a reason to get up. I had to force myself out of bed to feed him and look after him and sometimes having that little push to get me up was just what I needed to start the day. Our male cat is very vocal too and he won’t let you ignore him when he’s hungry. He definitely won’t let you forget about his meal times.
When we got our second cat (our little female cat) she also came at a point of despair for me. She was my little light in the dark and another reason to go on living. I couldn’t imagine my life without her now.
2. They are independent
Cats are more independent than dogs, which makes them perfect for anyone struggling with mental health. You don’t have to walk them, they clean themselves and are happy to sleep for the majority of the day (I can relate!)
Both our cats are indoor cats, but if your cats go outside then they are even more independent. You won’t have to deal with scooping out a litter tray daily.
As I’ve learned over the years, the way your cats interact with you can vary based on their personalities. Our male cat (who we’ve had since he was a kitten) is very independent and does things on his own terms. You can’t pick him up and expect him to want to cuddle you. In fact, if you pick him up, he whines and struggles. Cuddles happen when he feels like it, but when he does feel like coming over for cuddle time it feels really special like you’ve been chosen!
Our little female cat is completely the opposite. She’s super needy and would be extremely happy to be joined at my hip at all times. I joke she’s like my shadow, because she follows me around. When we got her, the couple we got her from told us that she was a lap cat and would be happy to sit on you all day. I was excited at that, because that’s what I wanted.. although I doubted that she actually did. It was one hundred percent true though. I’ve never known a cat to be as clingy and as adorable as she is, sometimes it can be annoying though.
I’ve actually had to put a bed on my desk now for when I blog or game on my computer, as she will sit in front of the keyboard and refuse to move until she gets cuddles. I think the bed was a nice compromise.. she can be near me still even when I’m busy. She seemed happy with that. Pictured below:
4. They seem to know when you’re sad
Both of our cats have a pretty good instinct for when I’m sad, either that or they just have amazing timing. They both stay close to me when I’m sad and our little female cat will even nudge my face if I’m crying as if to say, “Don’t cry mummy.”
They look very concerned when I’m upset, especially if I’m sobbing loudly and uncontrollably. I’m sure this is probably to do with how loud and strange I’m being than actual concern though. But I do believe they have some intuition when it comes to how I’m feeling.
5. They are perfect little hunters
I hate spiders, insects and anything of that nature.. so I’m super thankful that our male cat loves to hunt and eat those things. Although, he once ate a big spider and I guess he didn’t like the taste of it because he refuses to eat big ones since that day. He actually spat the offending spider out. I guess it tasted really bad? His favourite thing to go after is crane flies, though we don’t get many where we live now.
Our female cat is more playful when she finds a spider or something. She doesn’t go after it to kill it, at least not intentionally.. she will just jump around and play with it, pawing it. Everything needs to be her friend. It’s good though, she alerted me to a huge spider the other day as she was jumping around randomly like a little lamb and I wondered why.. and then I saw it!
6. They allow you to be lazy sometimes
When either of our cats is on my lap, that’s it, I can’t move until they move.
It’s a great way to avoid doing things sometimes, as you’re like, well, I was going to do that but I can’t now. They feel warm too, perfect little furry heat sources for when you’re cold.
Even when I’m lying in bed and they’re on top of me, I’m not moving until they do. Sometimes I’ll be desperate for the loo though and I’ll have to get my fiancé to take them off me so I can get up guilt free.
7. They’re clean
I know this ties in somewhat with the fact that they are independent.. but this is really a plus. They don’t need bathing!
Well, unless they’re not good at grooming themselves. When our male cat was a kitten he was really bad at grooming himself, but we quickly learned bathing wasn’t for us (since he scratched the crap out of me when we put him in water!) Thankfully, we found this dry shampoo stuff for cats that didn’t need water or rinsing, something we wish we had been using from the start.
But generally cats are very clean. They are always grooming themselves.. the only thing you need to do is give them an occasional brush, clip their back claws if they get too long and clean their teeth (if they let you) Both our cats don’t like us doing anything like that to them. We may have to look into paying someone to do it for us because I’m sure they’d behave with a stranger.
8. They’re soft
Cat fur is always super soft and strokable. My fiance told me that dogs hair isn’t always soft, so cats have an advantage over dogs there!
I’ve never met a cat that wasn’t soft.. I’m sure even those cute little weird alien hairless cats are soft.
It’s lovely to just sit with them and stroke them over and over. I especially love stroking just above their nose, it feels nice and they look like they enjoy it! Then, because I can’t resist, I boop them gently on the nose.
9. They’re relaxing
There’s something super calming and relaxing about a purring cat. It makes you feel really good.
When a cat purrs (for the most part) it’s because they’re happy. It’s really nice to listen to and knowing they’re happy makes you feel good too. It’s a relaxing sound and I enjoy the ASMR vibes of it.
Cat purrs can be so different too. Our male cat purrs extremely loud, whereas our female cat has soft purrs.
10. They are super entertaining
Cats are so fun to observe. Because of their inquisitive nature, they can find themselves in all sorts of predicaments and it can be hilarious to watch. They are just so funny sometimes and I never get bored of watching what my cats do. I love watching how they react to new things we bring into the house. Everything needs to be sniffed, fully checked out and of course they need to sit in the box it came in.
Not only are they entertaining, but they are fun to video and photograph. I’m forever taking photos of our cats. I think most of my photos on my phone are of the cats. The majority of them are of the cats just sleeping.. you think I’d get bored of taking photos of them sleeping, but I don’t. I just adore everything our cats do.
Do you have any cats? Or any pets in general? Did I miss anything off my list?
