It’s my Birthday this Friday, so what better way to celebrate than with cake and a competition! The very lovely Bakerdays were kind enough to send me this pretty cake to review for my Birthday. They are also giving you guys a chance to win one too through my blog! Details of the competition and a discount code for you all, can be found at the end of this post.
Who are Bakerdays
Bakerdays sell awesome cakes that can be delivered directly to you. Not only do they sell letterbox sized cakes and regular cakes, but they sell cupcakes too. All of these can be personalised with your own images, or you can even request a particular design if they don’t have what you’re looking for. There are a lot of their own designs to choose from though, and for all occasions. Bakerdays even offer balloons! These can also be personalised. How amazing would it be to receive a personalised cake and a balloon?
Types of cake you can get from Bakerdays
I love the fact that there are a lot of different flavour options for you to choose from too. You can pick from traditional sponge, lemon drizzle, fruit or rich chocolate chip.
They even offer a gluten and wheat free sponge and a dairy free sponge too.
These are all available in a variety of different sizes too. From the small letterbox cake, (which serves 3-4 portions) which is 12cm x 2.5cm… up to a large cake, (which serves 40-55 portions) and is 30cm x 5cm.
The letterbox cakes start at £14.99 and go up to £17.99 (depending on what flavour you choose).
My experience with Bakerdays
Navigating their website was extremely easy and picking out a design for my letterbox cake was a lot of fun. I did think about going with a photo cake at first, but was undecided on what photo I’d use. Knowing me, it would have been my cats. I then thought about perhaps asking Bakerdays to create me my own design based around a Merkitty. Both of these were viable options, but I didn’t really want to be difficult.
I finally found this really pretty floral cat design and settled on that, but I did spend longer than I care to admit looking at all the designs. Happy with my selection, I just had to pick what flavour I wanted my letterbox cake to be. I’m a chocoholic, so there was no question that it had to be the chocolate one.
I then picked my delivery date and waited eagerly for it to arrive.
How my letterbox cake from Bakerdays arrived
Above is the package that came through my letterbox. It arrived on the date I asked for it to be delivered too. I have edited out my details to protect my privacy.
I was a little nervous that my postman wouldn’t actually put it through my letterbox. The postman often rings the bell even when something can fit! I was pleased to see that the box states that it fits through the letterbox, so I’m hoping my postman read that and realised it was actually okay to put it through.
Inside the box you get a lovely little tin and a card. The tin is a great idea, especially if you have pets, you can know how risky it is receiving any sort of food through the post. If it can be ripped open and eaten my cats will try. I am guessing this is probably even worse if you have dogs. So even if they managed to get into the box, I doubt they’d manage to open the tin.
This is how it looked on opening:
Freeing the Bakerdays letterbox cake out of the tin
The design looks so adorable! It’s one thing to see it on the website, but to see it in real life is another thing.
The cake easily pulls out of the tin thanks to a tab on the side that you lift up on. I had no issues using the tab and transferred it to a plate without dropping it. The base of the cake is resting on a cake board too, which helps keep it stable.
I really didn’t want to cut into the cake at first, it just looked too pretty to destroy! When I finally braved sinking the knife into it, the cake sliced really easily and the cake wasn’t crumbly and held together really well.
Tasting the letterbox cake from Bakerdays
The cake was very nice!
I must confess that I was worried it was going to be dry because of the lack of any filling, but the cake was really moist inside. The cake sat on a splodge of buttercream to adhere it to the cake board and the white fondant had some buttercream under it too, both of which helped it not be dry.
The cake was chocolatey and delicious and the fondant was amazing. I’m very partial to fondant!
I had to keep telling my male cat to shoo, because he was trying to get some. He’s eaten my birthday cake before in the past… strange boy. But even he knew that this cake was too good for him not at least try to get a bit of. Don’t worry, he didn’t manage to.
Final thoughts on the Bakerdays letterbox cake
I think the letterbox cake is a wonderful idea! It’s the perfect gift for someone, especially since you don’t have to be sure they’re going to be home to receive it. I would be very happy to send one out as a gift. They are perfectly sized for one or two people.
I loved my experience with Bakerdays and I definitely recommend them.
