I’ve been getting Birchbox boxes through the post now since April and I thought I’d share what I’ve really enjoyed and what I really haven’t.
These are my hits & misses from April to August!

April 2017 Hits –
- ELEMIS Hydra-Boost Day Cream
I absolutely loved this cream. It was perfect for my dry skin and it was quickly absorbed. I felt so incredibly soft whenever I used this and I tried to make my sample last as long as possible. It moisturises and is said to repair your skin over time. I definitely felt that my skin was super soft, much better than any other moisturisers I’ve used.
The downside is the price.. I went to purchase the full size and at £39 I just couldn’t justify spending that much on a cream. I’m sure if I was super rich and had more money than sense that would be just a drop in the bucket, but to me that is super expensive. I was very sad when I finished this cream.. but all good things have to come to an end, right? I definitely recommend it though if the price point isn’t any concern for you. I’m hoping I get another sample of it some day!
There were a couple of other products in this box that I enjoyed, but not enough to write about.
April 2017 Misses –
Baïja Paris Crème Moana in Fleur de Tiarè
This cream is described as having an exotic fragrance that lingers, packed with good ingredients. Well, the fragrance sure did linger.. they weren’t wrong. It’s an overpowering fragrance, to the point where my fiancé even commented on it. Our two cats thought the smell was the worst and wouldn’t even be near me when I had it on.. they would take one whiff, crinkle their furry faces up and run away in disgust. I guess if you are a fan of really strong lingering scents then this would be for you.. but for me, it just missed the mark and therefore it made my misses for this month.
I have to say I wasn’t a huge fan of the box design either. It was floral and just not my thing. This was my first Birchbox and I must admit that I was a little concerned that I had made a horrible mistake when I asked for this as a gift.. fortunately, I think this is the only one that I didn’t enjoy that much. It’s a shame because it’s my birthday month box, so I was hoping for something good.
It’s all in the details
May 2017 Hits –
- Dr. Brandt Pores No More® Cleanser
I’d never used a pore minimising face wash before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I really loved it though! It lathered up and felt amazing on my skin. After using it my face felt tight and I’m not sure if it was my imagination or not, but my pores did look a lot better than before. Again, after using it, I wanted to purchase the full sized product.. and then when I saw the £30 price tag my heart sank. Am I just super cheap or are these things priced so expensive? It won’t be something I purchase purely because of how pricey it is, but I did love it and was gutted when I finished my sample.
Spectrum Collections Marbleous Tulip Eye Contour Brush
Super soft and pretty tapered brush. It’s really nice for blending and I was happy to receive a nice brush in my box. At only £4.99 it’s a steal and would be something I’d purchase should anything happen to this one.
I loved the marble looking box for this month too, very stylish.
May 2017 Misses –
Kueshi Shine & Volume Mask
This was the first hair mask I’ve ever used and it was no better than me using a decent conditioner. I was excited for this product when I received it, but it was just nothing like I had hoped it would be. I was expecting my hair to feel incredible after and it didn’t, I was not impressed at all and that’s why it’s a miss. The price isn’t bad at £10.50 but I still think a good conditioner will be a good alternative.
The mascara I received in this box wasn’t much to rave about either, but it’s not quite bad enough to make my misses for this month.
June 2017 Hits –
Bobbi Brown Extra Eye Repair Cream
I wasn’t expecting to like this eye cream, but it was amazing! I am super duper sad that I finished the whole pot. It brightened up my dark circles, which I had just thought would be dark forever. Yet again, though, the price is completely ridiculous. £46 is the price on the Birchbox website and elsewhere the price isn’t much different. My fiancé said he’d buy it for me if I really wanted it because he loves me, which is super sweet of him, but I told him I couldn’t let him pay that much for an eye cream. I’m determined to find another that is much cheaper that does the same thing. If anyone knows of one, please let me know!
Scrub Love Original Lovin’ Scrub
A super messy coffee body scrub. I’m not even kidding when I say it was messy, this stuff got all over my showering area.. but I love it. I don’t drink coffee, but I adore the smell and this was just so nice on the skin. It was a great exfoliator and the smell was absolutely amazing. I breezed through this sample and before I knew it, I had finished it. At £11.95 it’s a little on the higher price of things, but not too bad that I wouldn’t consider it again. My normal body scrub is £7 after all.. but there is a lot more of it, so I’m not sure if I’d switch out my regular for this.. but maybe as a treat I’d consider it.
Meech and Mia Browliner
I’m always seeing people with gorgeous, defined brows and it made me insanely jealous because I just plucked mine and left them as is, there was no definition to them so when I got this browliner I was excited to play with it. I thought it was a little light for me, but it actually works better than I expected. It is a little strange to see my brows so defined, so I’m kind of having mixed feelings about using it on the regular; but I did enjoy it and it worked very well. £12.99 doesn’t seem too steep either, I think you’d get a lot of use out of it.
ecoTOOLS Eye Enhancing Duo Set
These brushes have changed my eye makeup game completely. I love them so much! It’s really handy for me that on each side of the brush it tells you what it is for. I am super forgetful and sometimes I’m like, “Uhh, which brush do I use to blend again?” and this takes the hassle out of that for me. I think it’s a great beginner set of brushes too, and they are super soft. At only £5.99 it’s amazing.
This month came in a bag and I really liked that too! June has to be my favourite Birchbox so far. I didn’t really have any dislikes.. the only other thing I got was a hand cream and it was okay, nothing to write home about, but I didn’t hate it either.
July 2017 Hits –
Rituals Hammam Body Mud
A great clay mineral rich scrub. Did I mention I love scrubs? This left me so soft and I felt like it really helped out my skin. I enjoyed the clay mixed with eucalyptus scent too, it was really refreshing. £14 is slightly more than I’d be willing to pay for a scrub.. but I did enjoy it and it was really nice and if you have the money for it, I do recommend it. If you’re on a budget though, there are cheaper scrubs out there.
amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo
I included this dry shampoo in my hits, but there were a couple of things I didn’t like about it too.. the fragrance is the best part of this dry shampoo, it smells a lot nicer than my usual dry shampoo. It works really well too. Only downside was I only got a couple of uses out of it, the sample was tiny and I have a lot of hair. Yet again, it’s pricey at £20. A lot more expensive than my regular one, which works just the same.. only doesn’t smell as nice. Hopefully, if you bought the full one it would last a lot longer than only two times.
The box design of palm trees against a pretty gradient was really nice too.
July 2017 Misses –
Ugh, I really wanted to like this product. I really did.. but it was just awful. I’m always seeing people rave about Benefit products and was super excited to see it was included in my box. First off, I didn’t get the colour I requested – so that was the first immediate disappointment. The colour I received just didn’t work for me, it was too orange and I didn’t like it. But the colour wasn’t the major issue.. it just applied really streaky and thin to my lips and felt gross when used on the cheeks. I couldn’t wait to get it off. This is one product that just ended up in the bin. At £25.50 it is laughable. It’s put me off of trying other Benefit products too. I really hope I just got a bad one and this isn’t what their products are normally like.
August 2017 Hits –
Spectrum Collections The Glam Clam – a brush from it
I already talked about this brush in my last post, so I won’t say too much about it other than the fact that I like it. I don’t think it’s available to buy individually and you have to purchase the set at £59.99. They are presented in a really cute clam and definitely give off mermaid vibes for sure. I really like the brush and the concept of the clam to hold the brush collection in, but I don’t think I will be buying it. It’s a lot of money to shell out at once (see what I did there!) but I think it would make an amazing gift.
The box itself is gorgeous and is totally my aesthetic.
August 2017 Misses –
Merci Handy Love & Hand Cleansing Gel – Hello Sunshine
It’s handwash.. what more can be said about it?! Huge disappointment to receive in my box. It’s a nice smelling handwash, but other than that I wasn’t impressed.
So, that’s my hits and misses for Birchbox from April to August. I hope you enjoyed my take on what I liked and what I didn’t and maybe it’s helpful for you. I was not paid to say any of this, these opinions are purely my own. I’d be interested to know what products you received if you are signed up and what you thought of them too. Let me know!
